Tex Ritter: Unsung Hero of the Cold War

As the world celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the Fall of Communism, it’s only fair that we should honor those who played a part in its downfall.

Tex Ritter may be best known for singing classic cowboys tunes such as “High Noon”, “Take Me Back to My Boots and Saddle” and “Rye Whiskey” or perhaps you know him as the father of John Ritter, beloved star of television’s Three’s Company. What you probably didn’t know about Tex Ritter is that his musical catalog struck fear into the hearts of Reds everywhere.

Here’s a nice little ditty called “The Fiery Bear” with some swingin’ hillbilly backing that makes the song seem like it would feel at home on any rural jukebox of the 1950s:

“The Fiery Bear” is cool and all, but I am pleased to present the Be-All and End-All of anti-communist songs, “The Red Deck of Cards”.
Tex Ritter - The Red Deck of Cards
A vicious re-write of the wartime chestnut, “The Deck of Cards“, “The Red Deck of Cards” is credited to none other than Red River Dave McEnery, the undisputed King of the Topical Song.

I’ll bet U2 didn’t perform this at their free concert
